Biography

Kim Sanders, born in 1968 in East Chicago, Indiana, began singing as a child at the age of three. With her parents, who both worked for the U.S. Army, she traveled a lot and came into contact with different styles of music. The girl was especially influenced by the eclectic musical tastes of her mother, a military theater director: Before her time in the Army, her mother worked as the first dark-skinned, female country and western radio DJ in the United States. Kim’s grandmother was also a jazz singer, dancer and entertainer: so music is in Kim Sanders’ genes.

She sang in musicals as early as high school. At 15, she decided to become a professional singer/songwriter and started writing her own songs. At 17, she got an engagement on the children’s television show “Upbeat” in Savannah, Georgia. Four years later, in 1989, she moved with her family to Heidelberg, Germany and began singing in the jazz band “Yo Yo Haribo.” Already one year later she worked as a studio and background singer for Costa Cordalis and Karl Keaton and performed in the “Mannheim” cover band “Krypton”.

Then the Euro Dance scene discovered her – and the Euro Dance scene discovered her: Her first single “Show Me”, produced by Torsten Fenslau on Abfahrt Records in 1993 stayed nine weeks in the German Media Control Single Charts. Two more singles followed in 1994: “Tell Me That You Want Me” (released on Abfahrt Records) and “Ride” (released by Sony Music). With “Ride” Sanders made it into the German charts one more time. During this time (1993 – 1996) she also sang as a studio voice for the Eurodance project “Captain Hollywood”: in the songs “Impossible”, “Loft”, “Hold On”, “Flame”, “Next Time (I Promise)” her voice can be heard. In 1996, she released another single “Jealousy” on Sony Music Records. Between 1996 and 1998 the formation “Culture Beat” engaged her as a front woman: together they released the album “Metamorphosis”. In 2001, another single was released “Food for Thought” on Universal Music.

From 2001 the electronic ambient group “Schiller” engaged her as a guest singer. This collaboration lasted over nine years. Kim Sanders can be heard on several albums of “Schiller”, toured with the band and could land two more chart hits with “Schiller”.

Their single “Something About You”, released in 2003, failed to make it into the sales charts despite a lot of attention, because the record company made a mistake with the barcode. That year, Sanders also released her debut solo album, Pretty on Edge. She dedicated the song “Release” on this album to the singer Melanie Thornten, with whom she had sung in the Eurodance Project “La Bouche”, who died in a plane crash in 2001.

In 2004 Sanders recorded the track “Aus Gold” with “Milú und Heppner”. She also continued to work with many artists such as Schiller, Aural Float, Stefanie Heinzmann, Till Brönner, Nicola Conte and Wolfgang Haffner.

She produced her second solo album “A Closer Look” in 2009 together with the C.A.R.E. Music Group and the producer team Christian Prommer and Roberto di Goia, for which she won the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik” in the category “Black Music” in February 2010.

In December 2011, Kim Sanders took part in the reality talent show “The Voice of Germany” as part of Team Nena. She could convince with cover versions of “All That She Wants”, “Killing Me Softly with His Song” and “Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down”. In addition, her single “Haunted” was released by “Voice of Germany”. She made it to the last four finalists of the show and was only beaten by one competitor in the end: Kim Sanders came in second.

The singer, of whom “Welt online” writes, “she has as much talent in her little finger as some others don’t have in their whole body” likes to travel and loves to connect with people of foreign cultures as if automatically through music. In addition, Kim Sanders has another special passion: in 2000, she completed her training as a priestess at the “National Interfaith Seminary” in the United States, a free church that allows people of different faiths to marry within one ceremony. Since then, Kim Sanders has been able to marry such couples, or couples who cannot marry denominationally for other reasons. She also volunteers for the non-profit organization “Kinderhospiz e.V.”, for which she works as an ambassador. She has just released the single “Light a Light” with the club. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the organization.

In May 2015, Kim Sanders released another new single, “In the Air Tonight,” to critical and fan acclaim, and is currently working on her third solo album.
